Speaker issues...looking for a sub

Greetings all

I bought a pair of DT BP-8040's back in 2014 and over the years have had to replace the amp plates that drive the 8" woofers twice. This past weekend, one of the amp plates stopped working again so now only one of the towers is providing the low end. I have reached out to DT to find out if they sell the amp plates and at this time, they don't. They may have additional stock within 90 days but to be honest, I'm not sure I want to buy more amp plates given the history of the previous ones. They also show 3 authorized repair shops and none of them had anything greater than a 2.5 on reviews.

So, with all that being said, I'm looking at purchasing a sub. I looked at SVS and used their recommendation tool and the subs recommended were more than I'm willing to spend (all $1500+). Right now, the max I want to spend it probably $800. So after spending the last few days watching YT reviews, reading reviews, etc.., I thought I'd see what others thought. My living room, dining room and kitchen are one big room. No dividing walls, etc.. Just one long rectangle. The sq feet for all is around 1550 sq ft with 10 ft ceilings and wood floors.

My GF doesn't care for extremely loud movies/music and neither do our two Shih Tzu's. I'm not looking for anything that's gonna rattle stuff off the walls, rattle the windows, etc.. I have looked at the RSL 10s but unfortunately they are out of stock for just the sub at this time. I've also checked out the SVS SB-1000 pro and the Monolith subs. I don't want to go out and buy new speakers. Drives me nuts thinking I spent $1800 for two speakers 7 yrs ago and have had to replace the amp plates twice (and now maybe a third time). So I'd like something that will work well with my current setup (or lack there of...especially if the other amp plate stops working and I'm left with highs and mid's on the towers). Oh, primary purpose would be TV/movie viewing with music every now and then. Wish we had a dedicated movie theater but for now, it's all in the living room.

One last thing...I don't want anything too large. The smaller the better.

Appreciate any/all suggestions and thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Thank in advance
David

Some suggestions(all are sealed for size considerations & a little over budget sorry)

Two SVS SB1000's black friday sale = $899

One SVS SB3000 = $1099, much better than the SB1000, worth the extra

PSA S2410 - This is new, the most pricey option, but an excellent value = $1199

HSU ULS-15, $899

Given that one bass module is dead, are you unplugging the other one to simulate it being dead too? That seems the only way this approach will work. Even then, I think you will have difficulty because the bass modules in those speakers play quite a bit into the mid-range frequencies with a gradual slope in their crossover region. Generally, receivers will employ a steeper slope that will not match very well.

One possibility would be to employ a miniDSP module instead of using the receiver's internal bass management. This should allow you to use a 6dB/octave slope that would more closely match your speakers.

If it were me, I'd chalk it up to lesson learned and sell off the speakers, then use the proceeds to get a more conventional set of books or unpowered towers and a sub.

Thank you all for your replys. @RayGuy...this was something I was worried about. Whether or not adding a sub would compensate/work with the speakers as they are. It is definitely a lesson learned. Given the history on the DT speakers I have, it's very unlikely I'll ever buy anything DT related again. I also have the a DT center and DT rears and have had no issue with either but those are being powered by my receiver. What I may do is wait for DT to have spare amp plates, buy one and replace the defective one and then sell off everything....start from scratch.

Given that 1) you are only buying one, 2) you have budget limits, and 3) you have a large space

I recommend vented/ported as you get a lot more bang for your buck.

Prices recently went up across the board but HSU is still a good deal:

Where are you located at?
I'll have a pair of 3-4 month old HSU VTF-2 mk5's looking for a new home very soon...

What's the spec on that mid driver in the BP-8040? At 3.5" I'm worried that a true subwoofer will leave a hole in your frequency response if you can't cross it over high enough. It seems to me that if you plan to keep the speakers and unplug the woofer what you really want is a midbass module. Of course that will create localization issues unless you buy two and position them next to the towers. I think this is a recipe for disappointment.

I like your revised plan better. Live with it until you can replace the amp, ditch the lemons, hook yourself up with some new towers you love, then reassess your needs from there.

Agreed - I would replace the failing powered towers with a pair of passive towers and then add a subwoofer to the system.

Depending on how the DT crossover is designed, you may be able to bypass the amps if the are being fed an already low-passed signal from the crossover and then convert them to full passive. That would keep them running and save on the towers purchase.
